Día de los Muertos

On this Día de los Muertos
I am so grateful
To my abuelos
Whose long ago venture to a new land,
Hearts filled with love, hope and dreams
Blossomed into a large, extended family
A family ever growing
In love, hope and dreams...

Now and Then

"When I was a child, I spoke as a child,
I understood as a child, I thought as a child.
But, when I became a man,
I put away the things of a child.
 We see now through a glass in a dark manner;
 but then face to face.
Now I know in part;
but then I shall know even as I am known.
And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three:
but the greatest of these is charity."
1 Corinthians 13:11-13

waiting...wondering..anticipating...trusting...

waiting for the outcome
wondering what it might be
anticipating with delight
trusting in its perfect beauty
God's Will is my greatest desire...
"Trust in the Lord and do good
and dwell in the land
and thou shalt be fed with its riches.
Delight in the Lord
and He will give thee
the requests of thy heart.
Commit thy way to the Lord
and trust in Him
 and He will do it.
And He will bring forth thy justice as the light
and thy judgment as the noonday."
Psalm 36 (37)

Rest

Trusting in His Divine Will, we are free from the burden of worry and doubt. We can rest securely within His heart. Jesus promises that when we come to Him, His yoke is easy, His labor is light and He will give us rest. The unbearable becomes bearable.
The significance of the incomprehensible becomes clearer
as we contemplate the Holy Face of Jesus.
Within His will resides our soul's peace.

Hope that Cannot Fade

The return to a joyous, tranquil and hopeful state of mind
follows any storm trustingly weathered in Jesus' embrace.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to His great mercy
hath regenerated us into a lively hope
by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
unto an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled
and that cannot fade,
reserved in Heaven for you.

Mystical Euphony

We lingered after Mass today and sang some Holy Week chants and rounds. The acoustics of the empty church added a mystical euphony to our spontaneous chorus. Then we took a walk by the river as chilly April showers evaporated into misty golden rays of sun. Later, while washing dinner dishes, I was pleasantly surprised by the memory of how my Papi used to sing while he was washing the dishes.
Sometimes he sang camping songs, or old folksongs from Puerto Rico. Sometimes he sang hymns. My Mom sang along with him. They shared a warm and loving harmony in song as in life. Pretty soon we'd all join in. We'd make up silly verses or invent new variations on the melodies. We laughed alot. It is a sweet memory. I am grateful that this joyful tradition is still alive in my family.

Heaven's Response~Blessed are Ye

Heaven's response
to accusation is Compassion
to hatred is Love
to degradation is Humility
to ridicule is Mercy
to cruelty is Kindness
to wrongdoing is Forgiveness
to vulgarity is Modesty
to provocation is Peace
to greed is Generosity
to fear is Calm
to anger is Joy
Among my dear Papi's favorite prayers was "The Prayer of Saint Francis". This snowy Spring scene reminded me of him...

"And in fine, be ye all of one mind, having compassion on of another, being lovers of the brotherhood, merciful, modest, humble. Not rendering evil for evil, nor railing for railing, but contrawise, blessing for unto this are you called that you may inherit a blessing. For he that will love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil and his lips that they speak no guile. Let him decline from evil and do good. Let him seek after peace and pursue it. Because the eyes of the Lord are upon the just and His ears unto their prayers. But the countenance of the Lord upon them that do evil things. And who is he that can hurt you, if you be zealous of good? But if also you suffer any thing for justice sake, blessed are ye. And be not afraid of their fear. But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always to satisfy every on that asketh you a reason of that hope which is in you."

Spring Will Come Again

Pain carries with it supernatural gifts.
It ignites hope that Spring will come again.
It causes us to slow down and consider
The direction of our lives.

Resting beneath the veil of pain
Is the clearest focused vision
Of the Holy Face of Jesus
In the faces of those around us.
Only Our Lord can measure the supernatural merits of pain.
We can offer our pain for the holy souls in Purgatory.
We can offer our pain for the well being of
Our loved ones as well as for those who oppose us.
Pain teaches us to live as Jesus died
With a heart full of unconditional love and forgiveness.
"The Lord is good and giveth strength in the day of trouble
and knoweth them that hope in Him"
Nahum 1:7

The Beauty of Intercessory Prayer

While Joshua was fighting against the enemies of his people, Moses lifted his arms in prayer to Our Lord. Whenever his arms were elevated in prayer, Joshua's battle was succesful. When his arms fell from exhaustion, Joshua was about to be overcome. So, Aaron and Hur supported Moses' tired arms. Joshua overcame the enemy with the help of Moses' intercessory prayer.

Burdened by grief, sorrow, indecision and seemingly insurmountable obstacles, exhaustion steals my soul's strength to make any connection with God in prayer. Then I realize that at these times, Jesus, Our Blessed Mother and all of the angels and saints are helping me in the spiritual battle that takes place during prayer. Jesus promised never to leave or forsake us. We are never alone in prayer. We are always uplifted and strengthened by Our Blessed Lord's unconditional love. We are cheered on during spiritual struggles by the prayers of our brothers and sisters in Christ.  How beautiful it is that throughout eternity, we have the supernatural gift of encouraging each other through prayer.
"And when Moses lifted up his hands, Israel overcame. But if he let them down a little Amalec overcame."
Exodus 17:9-11

Tree of Life

"Hope that is deferred
afflicteth the soul
Desire when it cometh
is a tree of life."
